I started university when I was 18 years old. I just want to go to university - focus on classes and get good grades. But what I didn't know about university is how it can change people like me. During my early years at university, I was an introverted student. Having a curious mind, I looked at what my university can offer me to become better as a person during my time as a student there. I learnt you can do lots of different activities in university. You can join clubs, gym, become a student leader. I wanted to try all of those.
I actually didn't join any of those activities until the year 2022, reason was because there was covid during that time and I wanted to keep myself safe. I first joined the Computer Engineering club at my university. It was an awesome experience. My two favorite parts of the club was connecting with other software engineers like me and "Day in the life of a Software Developer". I really liked going to those conventions because it really inspires me to take in what a Software Developer does in a workplace.
I then joined the gym during the start of 2023, the next phase of my learning to grow phase. I went to the gym 3 days a week. Doing push, pull and legs. After a couple months my friends started noticing the gains. It was incredibly awesome. I became more confident.
The final phase of learning to grow was becoming a student leader at my university. I joined this university programme called the EDGE AWARD. It's an award enhancing your leadership, communication and employability skills. I then joined the Student Ambassador program at my university. I never thought an introverted student like me would go up to a level of becoming a student ambassador at my university because it takes that much skill and determination in yourself to become that level in a short amount of time. I was really proud of myself when I heart that I was accepted to become a student ambassador. I thanked God.
Finally, I am homered for my university for publishing an article about me as an EDGE AWARD Graduate.
My points are to become successful
I encourage students to dive into extra-curricular activities, internships, and community service to build a diverse skill set and strong networks.
Set clear goals and focus on developing soft skills and communication.
Remember to balance your efforts with self-care and resilience, as these will help you achieve both academic and broader life success.
